- Every Mt Woodgee Surfboard you see anywhere in the world has
been created using traditional hand-workmanship methods, and
by expert craftsmen personally and meticulously dedicated to their
utmost quality
- Our shapers, laminators, sanders and finishers have over 250 years
of cumulative experience in the art of hand making ‘world’s best’ surfboards
- All Mt Woodgee surfboards are genuinely handcrafted. This is different to the
bogus term ‘hand-finished’
- No profilers, machines, mechanised devices, or lathes are used whatsoever in the production of a Mt Woodgee Surfboard
Hand tools and some power tools are utilised
Mass production framework and machinery are not extensions of hand tools or power tools. Mass production framework and machinery do not exist to provide ‘accuracy’.
Mass production framework and machinery exists specifically for the commercial purposes of providing volume in numbers, savings on laborious and technically difficult shaping time, and to cut costs
Obviously not everyone can (or should) ride the same bottom curves as everyone else
You are not a robot.
At Mt Woodgee, nor is your shaper
- Mt Woodgee surfboards are shaped in entirety by the attributed shaper (on the decal). This includes the bottom curves and rails.
Sadly, this becoming an extreme rarity
- The attributed shaper on the decal is person who shaped the surfboard. By hand. From start to finish. With pride.
- No trainees, novices or grommets are involved in the shaping or production of any Mt Woodgee surfboard.
Every surfboard craftsman at Mt Woodgee is an expert surfer as well as world leader in the respective areas of production.
Believe it or not, many surfboards available for retail are made by ‘workers’ who can’t even surf.
- My Woodgee Surfboards are constructed from the world’s best materials. Burford Blanks (Australia), Silmar Resin (USA) and Bay Mills Fibreglass Matting (Canada). We have traveled the world for many years researching surfboard materials, investigating new technologies and trialing components.
That is why we can assert with confidence and certainty, that the materials we use are superior to their competitors and their alternatives.
They’re not cheap. We could save money (and increase our margins) by using other materials
But we don’t
- We remain dedicated to producing fixed fin surfboards because we have the skills to laminate and sand them
Of course, boards with removable fins are available as well
“I would like you to be reassured by the above ‘Mt Woodgee Surfboard Ethics’. They are not something we threw together for the hell of it. Every single person who works for Mt Woodgee lives by these ideals.
We all take enormous pride in the company, and in particular our lovingly hand-made surfboards. Mt Woodgee is more than ‘just a brand’ to us. It represents a real place and a real way of life that we all feel fortunate to enjoy.
Our surfboards reflect our pride in Mt Woodgee, in our work and in ourselves as surfers.
We still hold the firm belief that a surfboard is unlike a bodyboard, a golf ball or a softball bat. They are not just ‘another piece of sporting equipment’ to be ‘milled’ by machines and cheap labour.
Surfboards cannot be credibly ‘sold’ using marketing methods that
support cheap production, by pushing the bullshit of ‘accuracy’ and ‘one bottom curve suits all’.
How ironic that in this most individualistic of all lifestyles, that mass producers and the media will have us believe that our surfboards should all come from the same machines, producing the same bottom curves!!
Surfboards are – and always have been – all about ‘flow’ and ‘feel’.
They are very personal part of a surfer’s life. They should contain very personal input and effort.
They should have soul.
I hope Mt Woodgee’s philosophies and ethics translate through our boards to you – our fellow surfers”
